French Language & Presence Lab
A 6-week exploration of voice, breath and embodied expression in French
I’m opening a small experimental group this term for learners who already have a solid foundation in French — particularly those who understand well but feel tension, hesitation or disconnection when speaking.
This laboratory offers a space to engage with the French language beyond conversation or academic learning — through breath, voice, body awareness and spontaneous expression.
Speaking in another language can create subtle tensions — in breath, voice or self-perception — even when comprehension is strong.
This Lab addresses those dimensions directly through structured physical and vocal work.
The focus is not on learning more vocabulary, but on inhabiting the words you already know.
Through guided experimentation and precise exercises, we activate breath, release vocal tension and reconnect language with physical presence.
Small-group format to allow depth, precision and individual attention.
No performance.
No evaluation.
Fluency is not required.
Commitment and curiosity are.
Just practice, presence and lived experience of the language.

About the work
This laboratory grows from over ten years of exploring the French language through theatre, voice and embodied practice.
Developed by Stella Sulak — theatre director and founder of Perth French Theatre — the work focuses on helping participants reconnect language with breath, movement and lived presence.
Rather than teaching French academically, the approach invites learners to inhabit the language physically and emotionally, allowing speech to emerge with greater freedom and authenticity.
